Range Hood Repair

Wall canopies, inserts and island hoods — blower assemblies, speed controls, dampers and lighting, plus the duct-side problems that get blamed on a fan that is working perfectly well.

A wall-mounted range hood with its underside panel dropped open to show the blower housings and the squirrel-cage wheel inside, two baffle filters laid out on the counter below

How it gets described on the phone

  • Smoke rolling out into the room while the blower is plainly running
  • Rattle or drone from the canopy that changes pitch with the speed setting
  • Hood stuck on one speed, or dead on the top speed only
  • Backdraft damper heard slapping in the duct on a windy day

What gets tested on the visit

  1. Baffle filters pulled and checked for loading before anything is blamed on the blower
  2. Blower wheel inspected for grease build-up and for anything fouling the housing
  3. Motor drawn at each speed, and the speed control checked where a single speed is dead
  4. Backdraft damper opened by hand and watched under the fan
  5. Canopy lighting, switching and the mounting itself, since a rattle is often neither motor nor duct

A hood that runs and still lets smoke into the room is a capture-and-duct problem far more often than a fan problem, and this is a city where the duct usually deserves the suspicion. Long horizontal runs, crushed flexible sections, dampers stiff with grease and shared shafts in older buildings all produce that symptom with a motor that tests perfectly. We check the parts we can reach and we tell you plainly when what remains is on the building's side of the wall.

Reviews from the North Side run

  • Nothing worked on the control panel and the lights had gone with it. He traced a burnt connector at the junction rather than condemning the board, and made the repair properly with new terminals.

  • The downdraft would rise partway and stop, then complain. Track was fouled and one lift motor was weak. He cleaned the mechanism, replaced the motor, and it travels the whole way again.

    Torsten Q. · Bucktown

  • Grease had found its way past the baffles and into the duct run through the masonry. He cleaned back as far as he could reach, showed me photographs of it, and refitted the baffles correctly.
